Each atom has one or more loosely bound electrons, known as free electrons, which move through the conductor (the wire), carrying the charge.

Direct current (DC) is the flow of electric charge in a constant direction. With alternating current (AC), the flow periodically changes direction.
Direct current is produced by sources such as batteries and solar cells. It flows through wires, semiconductors and insulators.
AC is the form of electric power supplied to homes. The waveform of an AC power circuit is usually a sine wave.
